Spironolactone is used in treatment of acne in women by targeting the hormonal causes of acne. Though it’s effective for treating acne in women, spironolactone isn’t typically used to treat acne in men because it decreases testosterone and can cause unwanted side effects. It is also used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure.
Dose and Administration: Spironolactone should be taken by mouth, as directed by your doctor. Doses for acne range from 50 mg to 200 mg. Your healthcare provider will determine what is the best dose for you depending on your situation. It is best to take your dose early in the day (before 6 p.m.) to prevent having to get up during the night to urinate.
Caution: If stomach upset occurs, take it with food or milk. Use of spironolactone is associated with menstrual irregularities. Contraception is recommended when used in premenopausal women for the treatment of conditions such as acne.
